How Many Calories Do You Actually Burn a Day?

How to calculate your real daily calorie burn using an established formula, instead of guessing based on how active you feel.

Most people who struggle to gain weight have never actually calculated their real daily calorie burn, they've just guessed based on how active their day feels. That guess is usually wrong, often by hundreds of calories, and it's a major reason weight gain efforts stall out.

The two numbers that make up your daily burn

Your total daily energy expenditure, often shortened to TDEE, is made up of two main parts. Calculating your basal metabolic rate

The Mifflin St Jeor formula is one of the most accurate and widely used equations for estimating basal metabolic rate. For men, it's 10 times your weight in kilograms, plus 6.25 times your height in centimeters, minus 5 times your age in years, plus 5. For women, the calculation is the same except you subtract 161 instead of adding 5 at the end.

Moderate activity, three to five days a week, lands around 1.55. Active, exercising six to seven days a week, is about 1.725, and very active, combining hard training with a physically demanding job, can reach 1.9.
