How to Know Your Body Type in 2 Minutes

A quick, science based way to identify your body type using simple measurements, no guesswork required.

You don't need an expensive body composition scan to get a useful read on your body type. A few simple measurements, taken at home in under two minutes, give you enough information to build an appropriate plan.

Why this matters before you start a program

Generic "how to build muscle" advice assumes everyone starts from the same place, but a naturally lean ectomorph, someone with a skinny fat body composition, and someone starting from an average build all need meaningfully different calorie and training approaches. Two minutes of measuring saves months of following the wrong plan.

Measurement one: your waist to height ratio

Measure your waist circumference at your navel, standing relaxed, not sucking in or flexing. Divide that number by your height, using the same units for both. A ratio under 0.5 suggests relatively low central body fat for your frame. A ratio of 0.5 or above suggests more central body fat than your overall bodyweight might indicate, a pattern common in skinny fat body types even at a normal or low bodyweight.

This single ratio is more useful than bodyweight alone, since it accounts for how your fat is distributed rather than just how much you weigh in total.

Measurement two: your BMI as a rough starting filter

Body mass index isn't a perfect measure, it doesn't account for muscle mass, but it's a reasonable quick filter when combined with the waist to height ratio above. Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. Under 18.5 suggests a naturally lean, likely ectomorph leaning frame. Between 18.5 and 25 with a low waist to height ratio suggests a balanced, average build. That same normal range paired with a higher waist to height ratio points toward a skinny fat pattern instead.

Measurement three: your wrist to height ratio, for frame size

This one's a bit less scientifically rigorous, but it's a commonly used general indicator of natural bone structure and frame size, which is useful for setting realistic expectations rather than diagnosing anything. Measure your wrist circumference at its narrowest point, then divide your height by that number. For men, a result above 10.4 suggests a naturally small frame, between 9.6 and 10.4 suggests medium, and below 9.6 suggests a larger frame. For women, the equivalent thresholds are roughly 11.0, 10.1 to 11.0, and below 10.1.

A smaller frame doesn't mean you can't build significant muscle, it just means your natural starting point and visual proportions will differ from someone with a larger frame, which is worth knowing so you're comparing your progress to your own baseline, not someone else's.

Putting it together

Combine these three numbers and you get a genuinely useful snapshot: are you naturally lean or carrying more central fat than your weight suggests, and what's your natural frame size. This takes the guesswork out of deciding whether you need an aggressive surplus or a more conservative one, and it sets realistic expectations for what your build will naturally look like as you gain muscle.

A worked example

A 28 year old woman measures a waist to height ratio of 0.43 and a BMI of 19.8, placing her in the balanced, athletic leaning category described here.
